WoeBot is a robot that gives you a therapy session at your desk

WoeBot is a robot that gives you a therapy session at your deskWoeBot is a robot that gives you a therapy session at your deskThis we know Too many people struggle with their mental health in silence, especially at work. The stigma around mental health is still strong. Its time to change that. About one in five Americansare depressed, a condition that can wreck a persons mood, relationships, and productivity. More than half of people suffering from depression havent sought any treatment for it in the past year despite the painful consequences.Enter Silicon Valley techies with a solution that cuts out the middle man - or any man at all. If you cant (or dont want to) talk to humans about your problems, why elend try a judgment-free chatbot?Created by a team of Stanford psychologists, WoeBot is a Facebook Messenger bot thats programmed to monitor your moods by checking in with you daily on how youre feeling.Heres how it works WoeBot is based on cognitive behavioral therapy principles whe re you learn to break out of negative patterns by identifying their causes and by putting those negative thoughts in perspective. You can tell WoeBot how youre feeling and it will offer feedback, and suggest helpful videos and word games.I can capture patterns of your moodWhen I tried the two-week free trial, WoeBot first began by explaining its purpose to me Im hoping to capture a snapshot of your emotional life as it unfolds in real timeThe aim is that over time I can capture patterns of your mood that we can reflect on together and perhaps even link certain moods to certain situations. The word capture caught me off guard. Was this a chat with a friendly robot or an animal poacher?I was never under any delusion that I was talking to a real therapist, but for those that may feel like youre talking to someone with a medical license, Woebot offers a disclaimer. This might surprise you, butI am a robot, WoeBot will tell you before beginning a session. As smart as I may seem, Im notlage capable of really understanding what you need. This low bar of expectations made me feel like I was wasting my time. To spice the session up, I decided to go off script from the multiple choice, pre-selected answers Woebot offered me in conversations. I typed the word suicide and Woebot immediately responded since I had triggered its crisis systems. If you tell WoeBot about suicidal thoughts or self-harm, it will direct you to emergency help services, but it wont get you physically there. After informing me of emergency hotlines, Woebot changed topics and asked if I would like to select an anxiety buster activity or listen to relaxing music. The interaction served as one mora reminder that I was talking to an algorithm, filled with sophisticated rules and systems, yes, but not human empathy. If I really had needed serious help, I shouldnt turn to a chatbot. We trust robots with our feelings more than humansSo if WoeBot doesnt believe its really understanding what you need, whats the ben efit in using it?It appears that simply having our words heard- even by a robot- helps alleviate a lot of our stress. At the very least, WoeBot has been found to have more value than a self-help e-book. Before WoeBot was released to the commercial masses, it was subjected to empirical research and peer review. In a 70-participant experiment, people who used WoeBot over a self-help e-book self-reported lower depression and anxiety levels.Apparently, we also feel more comfortable talking to robot therapists than human ones. A 2014 study on a similar therapy bot found that participants who thought they were talking to a robot therapist were more likely to disclose what was really bothering them and have a productive therapy session. When the participants were told that humans were behind the virtual therapist with a human face, they would clam up and show less signs of sadness. We feel less judged when we think its only a computer on the other side, researchers concluded. Not HIPAA-compl iantBut significant ethical and privacy hurdles remain for therapy chat bots to go mainstream. WoeBot promises that a human may never see what you type but thats not a promise it can keep. WoeBot is not a licensed medical provider bound by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act to keep your medical information private. Although WoeBot will anonymize its users, Facebook can still read the content of your messages and know exactly who you are. When therapy and technology collide, it also inevitably leads to ethical minefields. As reported by The Verge, therapists on the Talkspace app are not always able to report patients to authorities when they discuss dangerous situations due to the apps anonymity. So talk about your feelings with a therapy bot if it helps you work through problems. But know that for better or worse, a bot is not the only one listening in.CORRECTION (11/27/17) This article originallycontained an imprecise description of the ability of therapists on t he Talkspace app to report patients to authorities.

Do yourself a favor and platzset up a professional-looking email address thats reserv ed for your job-seeking activities.2. The professional summary isnt full of fluffIt can be tempting to throw a bunch of buzzwords such as ambitious and self-starter into the summary section of your college-grad resume, but employers know these are pure fluff and wont be impressed when they read them. Dont tell employers how youre a great team player. Instead, explain how you served on a committee to raise money for your lacrosse team or received accolades for a group project during your internship. Click on the following link for more tips to craft your professional summary.4. Nicholas optimized his resume with relevant keywordsYour job application needs to get past multiple gatekeepers before it makes it into the hands of a hiring manager. Take a look at the job listings youre interested in and identify the key terms and phrases that routinely pop up. If you have those skills or were exposed to that industry or process, incorporate them into your resume. You can add them to a Core Competencies section, similar to Nicholas resume, or incorporate them throughout the Work Experience section.5. There arent any mentions of high schoolHiring managers are interested in what youve done lately, not what you accomplished four or more years before you went to college. Focus on highlighting your activities, accomplishments, and the work experience that took place during your college career, calling special attention to anything that directly support s your job goals.6. He lists his GPAOnly list your GPA on your entry-level resume if its a 3.0/4.0 or higher. If the GPA in your major is higher than your overall GPA, feel free to use that instead. However, keep in mind that employers will know why you didnt include your GPA and may ask you about it during the interview process.7. Nicholas didnt include his courseworkIf youve held at least one internship thats relevant to your degree and career goals, theres no reason to also include a list of the courses you took. Employers will value your internship experience over the stuff you learned in the classroom any day of the week. However, if you did not intern, include a list of the 400-level courses you took that are most closely tied to your job goals to show hiring managers what subjects youre familiar with.8. It plays up Nicholas selling pointsThe format of your entry-level college-graduate resume will depend on the information you have to work with. If you have a ton of great inte rnship experience, highlight that just below your professional summary and education sections. If you didnt hold any jobs that were related to your future career, play up other information instead, such as the high-level courses you took, major projects you participated in, academic or athletic honors you received, or extra-curricular activities that demonstrate your leadership skills. In Nicholas case, we divided his experience into two categories so his relevant internships took the spotlight. 9. Each employer has a company descriptionHelp employers get a better understanding of the industries and work environments you were exposed to by including a line that describes each company with which you held an internship. If youre tight on space, feel free to eliminate this information for your summer jobs that arent related to your current career goals. You can also omit this information from your internships if they were all held at companies with big, well-known brand names.10. Nicho las bulleted the most important informationUse bullet points to draw attention to the information you believe recruiters will care most about. This may include an accomplishment or other major contribution you helped your team achieve.11. Action verbs are used to describe his work experienceNotice how the bullets under Nicholas roles begin with an action verb? This information focuses on how Nicholas contributed to an end result. When youre new to the workforce, you may not have many major accomplishments and contributions to include in your resume however, use action verbs (e.g. created, led, managed, improved, developed, built) to describe your activities.12. His extracurricular activities and honors are providedYour first resume out of college should play up your best selling points. This may include any projects or extracurricular activities you held while attending college, as well as any scholarships or other honors you received during that time. Click on the following link fo r more tips on how to build a resume using college involvement as experience. 13. Nicholas relevant skills are listedTake a closer look at the job descriptions that interest you and note what technical skills they expect you to possess. This may include proficiency with a particular software program or language skill thats considered valuable in your chosen field. If you have a working knowledge of these platforms, list them on your resume. If you keep seeing a skill or tool mentioned that you dont know much about, look for free or low-cost online courses on the topic to bolster your skill set. Resources such as edX, SkillShare, and Lynda.com are great places to start.14. Mapping the best places for Millennials to make a living

Mapping the best places for Millennials to make a livingMapping the best places for Millennials to make a livingEarning an above-average wage early in a career is a critical predictor of long-term success. Raises and promotions compound over the course of several decades. This means that if young people start out earning relatively little compared to their peers, they tend to make less over their lifetimes. Our new map highlights the parts of the country where Millennials are earning the fruchtwein (and least) on an adjusted basis. We pulled our numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau, which tracked the median amount each age cohort made in 2016, the latest year in which comprehensive data was available. The Census Bureau defines Millennials as people born between 1982 and 2000. Another factor that influenced the data is the cost of living differences across the country. Knowing those differences, its clearly not surprising that people in Massachusetts earn more than those in Alabama. To account for that, we adjusted the figures to reflect the true cost of living in each region according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. This creates a level playing field to compare income levels in different states. Our next step was to simply create a heat map of the country, showing which states have the highest (purple) and the lowest (light blue) median wages for Millennials. Here are the 10 states (plus Washington, DC) where Millennials earn the most money1. Massachusetts $80,3072. Minnesota $77,0903. North Dakota $76,8364. Washington, DC $75,2205. Maryland $74,7376. New Hampshire $73,9417. Wyoming $73,3458. Alaska $72,3749. New Jersey $72,15010. Virginia $71,397Millennials are an interesting group to study for a couple of different reasons. They are the most diverse generation in American history, more of them went to college than previous generations, and they are now the largest contingent in the workforce. Many of them also graduated in the middle of the Great Recession, which economists believe might have a lifelong impact on their wages.Determining where Millennials are doing well (and where they are not) indicates broader trends in the American economy. For example, theres a pocket of purple and dark blue states in the Upper Midwest where these younger adults tend to make above-average wages, as high as $77,090, on an adjusted scale, in Minnesota. The same can be said about the Northeast between Virginia and New Hampshire. These regions contrast with the South, where Texas is the highest state at $62.2K, coming in at number 32 in our list overall. The South clearly stands out as a lackluster region for Millennials in the labor market.Perhaps the biggest surprise on our map is the West Coast, which doesnt look that different from the South. The one exception is Washington ($70.4K), which is $7,000 higher than California ($62.9K). This highlights the fact that big tech companies are creating great jobs for a select group of skilled workers, but if making the most money is your primary goal, you have a better chance of succeeding if you move to Nebraska instead of California.Want to learn more about where the highest-paying jobs are located? How to Talk to Your Boss About Work Life Balance

How to Talk to Your Boss About Work Life BalanceHow to Talk to Your Boss About Work Life BalanceFinding and keeping that elusive thing called work life balance is tough for most fathers. In an era when smartphones and other digital devices can allow us to be connected at work 24/7, no matter what our normal working hours, work tends to insert itself into family activities and personal time. A father can find it particularly difficult to successfully balance work, family and life when his employer or his supervisor is a workaholic himself or at least expects that level of time commitment of his employees. Some companies have a commitment to their employees work life balance but many employers do not. And with the ever increasing demands to do mora with less in todays corporate world, dads can find it difficult to keep those demands and the needs of their families in balance. At one point in my life, I had a anfhrer that was unusually demanding. I was on call 24/7 in his mind and neede d to answer my cell phone whenever he called, day or night, and needed a pretty good explanation if I didnt. I even programmed his ringtone as Hail to the Chief as a reminder that if he called, I needed to be there. So, if you find yourself in a situation where your work life balance is out of kilter and needs some rebalancing, you need to have the support, or at least the understanding of your boss. Here are some tips for talking with the boss about your need for work life balance. Remember the Strength of Your Position As you consider how to approach the boss, you need to remember that you come from a position of strength. Your employer has a lot invested in you in training and experience. He does not want you to burn out or to quit because you are unhappy or overburdened. If you think about it, your improved work life balance is a benefit to your employer, even if he doesnt get it yet. So, as you prepare, dont think about it as asking your boss for a favor think about the adv antage to him or her of your improved work life when you are better balanced. Focus on Productivity Your boss wants your best effort when you are on his clock. If you can find ways to accomplish more at work in your regular work schedule, the concern about you working around the clock will be less. So, start finding ways to be more focused and productive at work. For example, dont check emails all day long set aside time three or four times during the day when you will respond to emails. That will generate fewer interruptions and allow greater personal productivity. If you have a lot of meetings, work to make them shorter and more productive. If you have some repetitive tasks, find ways to do them faster and in more of a routine. Know the Facts Studies have shown over and over that workers with better work life balance are more productive, more loyal and better performers. So as you get ready to talk to the boss, obere extremitt yourself with some stats that show how a bett er work life balance can be a plus for him, the organization and you. Be Ready With Answers No boss likes to be presented with a schwierigkeit. They want to understand the issues and then be presented with good possible solutions. For example, if you are finding yourself going home later and later and you feel a need to get out of the office closer to on time, pose the problem to the boss and say something like, I know you might be worried about my work getting done on time if I leave earlier than I have been, but I could take work home so I could work for an hour after the kids are in bed or maybe I could come in a bit earlier the next morning. If you have a proposed solution to the problem, at least you are respecting his concerns and trying to find creative solutions. Approach the Boss Respectfully This conversation about work life balance will in many ways redefine your relationship. Make sure you have an attitude of cooperation, of finding compromise and direction. No r ecriminations or anger your purpose is to take steps toward a better balance. Speak in soft tones and with deference to his authority. Challenging him could create a negative here instead of a positive. Think of it as working together to solve any problem that arises at work. Be Prepared for Compromise You probably wont get everything you hope for from the conversation. But you should be able to find an answer that gets you closer to that delicate work life balance you are trying to find. Be willing to find a little middle ground - maybe a few more evenings at home without interruption or the ability to have a Saturday that is given entirely to your family. The process of getting closer to balance may take some time, and this conversation may be the first step in the journey. As you find answers that move you to a place where you have more time for your family and yourself, remember what a gift it is to have a supervisor that at least is willing to work with you. Keep the commit ments you make - both to your boss and to your family - and as the trust grows with the boss, more opportunities for addressing workplace issues will come. So stay focused, committed to making your time at work and at home more productive and positive, and as your work life and family life come into better balance, you will find greater peace inside yourself, knowing that you have chosen a way which will leave a legacy with your family forever.

Volunteer Resignation Letter Sample

Volunteer Resignation Letter SampleVolunteer Resignation Letter SampleWhen youre resigning from a volunteer position, its important to resign as gracefully as you would from paid employment. Why does it make a difference how you resign? First, its common courtesy togive noticewhenever possible. A no-show is inconvenient and confusing for the volunteer coordinator and other volunteers. Even though you are not paid as a volunteer, youre still needed. The organization will have to figure out how to cover your responsibilities and time. Secondly, people you work for and with when you volunteer make perfectpersonal references. Leaving on a good note will help you secure a positive recommendation for your next job or volunteer position. How to Resign From a Volunteer punkt Heres a good rule of thumb Follow all the same rules for resigning from a volunteer position that you would for a paid position. That means to be polite and respectful of the volunteer organizations needs. But, no ne ed to share a lot of detail about why youre resigning you can keep your letter brief and to the point. How Much Notice Should You Give? If you can, two weeks notice is the standard. If you cant, give as much notice as possible. There are no platzdeckchen requirements for leaving a volunteer job or regular employment, so its up to you to decide how much advance notice to give. Make sure your letter clearly conveys the last date you will be available as a volunteer. You can say Today will be my last day as a volunteer at XYZ. or As of July 1, I wont be available as a volunteer. How Should You Resign? Its fine tosend an email messageto the volunteer coordinator or whomever you work with letting them know you will no longer be available. If you prefer, mail a formal paper letter to the organization. Aphone call is another option if thats easier for you. What Should You Include in Your Letter? You can include a reason for your resignation, but you dont have to. Do say thank you for the o pportunity. You can also offer to help with the transition if that makes sense given the volunteer work. Be professional Follow the standard rules for formatting a business letter and proofread carefully.
